This month has felt heavy in a lot of ways. Just a few weeks ago, two of my mom’s brothers passed away one week apart. Earth Day would have been my mom’s 75th birthday — she passed away 12 years ago. They all grew up in Wisconsin, and I spent every summer there growing up, so many memories are tied to that state. I found one of my dad’s old worn t-shirts in a bin labeled “Mom & Dad’s clothes” in my attic. It had a tear through the chest, and instead of letting it stay hidden away, I wanted to give it new life. Using my Husqvarna Viking Designer Topaz™ 65, I repaired the tear with a mending serpentine stitch, then created a custom embroidery design in Creativate inspired by a memory of one of my dad’s old 60s/70s striped shirts. Giving old materials a second life ✨ I used my HUSQVARNA® VIKING® Designer Topaz 65 to stitch this Art Deco-inspired design using an endless fan pattern from @mysewnet. I resized it twice to fit different panels and build out the structure of this piece. I also tried the large magnetic metal hoop for the first time—and it was completely flawless. No shifting, no fuss… just perfect stitches every time. And the best part—this started as old jeans and an old apron. This flannel used to belong to my dad. After he passed away, it became one of the pieces of his clothing that I held onto. I started wearing it while I worked and in everyday life — the same way he did. His work clothes and everyday clothes were never really separate. Last year, during his birthday month, I embroidered our childhood home he built onto a sweatshirt. That project meant a lot to me, and ever since then I knew I wanted to stitch his truck next… I just didn’t know when or what I’d put it on. Over time this flannel developed a tear near the hem that kept getting caught on everything. Instead of mending it the usual way, it finally felt like the right place for the truck. So I embroidered the truck he drove for years — the same truck that shows up in so many childhood memories, including when he was building our home with his dad. This was my dad’s truck — the one he drove every day. The doors carried the name of his construction business, Castellano Construction. February has always felt a little heavier for me. It’s my dad’s birthday month, and every year I find myself wanting something tangible — something I can linger on and think about him. My dad was a builder. He owned his own company, Castellano Construction, and this was his original truck — the one he drove before the others, with his company name on the doors. If you’ve been here a while, you might remember the sweatshirt I made last February with the house he built. I’ve known I wanted to stitch his truck next — I just didn’t know what to put it on. This flannel was originally my dad’s work shirt. The stains, the wear — all from years on job sites. Over time, it became mine. If you’ve been here a while, you may recognize it from past videos, always in motion at the machine. But the hem kept catching on everything, and fixing it felt like more than a quick repair, so I put it away for a while. Until I realized the mend could become the tribute. I recreated his 90s truck in Creativate™ Embroidery Software, digitizing it from a photograph. Using my HUSQVARNA® VIKING® DESIGNER SAPPHIRE™ 85, I reinforced the worn areas with the Pivot Function for clean, controlled corners, restored the buttonholes with the Sensor One-Step Buttonhole Foot, and stitched the new buttons back on using the machine. Then I added the truck as a patch along the hem — like an old-time workwear mend. Not hiding the wear. Honoring it. He wore it first. Now I do. This started as an old coat that had seen better days — sun fading, wear, and years of use. Instead of letting it go, I upcycled it into a duffle bag for my son’s birthday 🎁 I wanted the details to feel vintage but playful — something fun for a 4-year-old now, but thoughtful enough to grow with him. The monogram adds a timeless touch, the airplanes were his request, and I made them removable so the bag can change as he does. The stripes weren’t just decorative — they helped disguise areas of sun damage and give the fabric new life. This build was stitched on my Husqvarna Viking Designer Sapphire™, which handled heavy layers with ease.
